Skye Ranch's inland position east of I-75 is a real advantage during storm season, but it is not an exemption. Here is a practical hurricane plan built around how this community is actually laid out.
Know your zone before you need to
Two different maps matter, and residents mix them up constantly. Your FEMA flood zone determines insurance requirements. Your Sarasota County evacuation zone (A through E) determines whether you are ordered to leave.
Much of the Skye Ranch area carries a low-risk flood designation, which means flood insurance is often optional rather than required. Optional is not the same as unnecessary — inland freshwater flooding from sustained rainfall is a genuine risk in a community built around lakes and wetlands. Look up your specific address on the Sarasota County property and emergency management sites, write both answers down, and re-check them each spring.
Season-start checklist (do this in late May)
- Test your shutters or impact-window hardware and confirm every panel is labeled to its opening.
- Photograph or video every room, including inside closets and cabinets, and store it in the cloud for insurance purposes.
- Review your homeowners policy for the separate hurricane deductible — it is usually a percentage of insured value, not a flat dollar amount.
- Confirm the generator runs and that you have safe fuel storage and a carbon-monoxide-safe placement plan well away from the house.
- Trim trees and palms away from the roofline, and check that your yard drainage and gutters are clear.
- Save your HOA management contact and the community's emergency notification method in your phone.
72 hours out
- Fill vehicles and refill prescriptions.
- Bring in every loose item from the yard, lanai, and pool deck — patio furniture, grills, planters, umbrellas, and children's toys become projectiles.
- Lower the pool water slightly, shut off power to the pool equipment, and never drain the pool completely.
- Charge everything, and buy ice and a hard cooler.
- Stock one gallon of water per person per day for at least seven days, plus food that needs no cooking.
- Set the refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings.
HOA and community considerations
Community amenities such as The Hub, pools, and the fitness center close ahead of a storm and reopen only after inspection — plan for several days without them.
Community gates may be placed in a fixed position for emergency-vehicle access, and landscaping crews and trash collection pause for the duration. Debris cannot go to the curb until the county announces collection, and HOA rules on temporary generators, tarps, and staging materials still apply during recovery.
Skye Ranch itself is not a public shelter. Sarasota County publishes its open shelter list, including pet-friendly and special-needs locations, once a storm is inside the warning window. Identify two options in advance — one nearby, one inland — and decide your trigger for leaving before the forecast makes it emotional.
Evacuation routes from Skye Ranch
From Clark Road (SR 72), I-75 is roughly three miles west, which puts you on the primary north-south evacuation corridor quickly. Expect it to be heavily congested during a countywide order.
Leaving early is the entire strategy. If you are in a mandatory zone or in a mobile or manufactured structure, go on the first day of the order rather than the last.
After the storm: contractors and claims
- Document damage with photos before moving anything, and make only temporary repairs that prevent further loss.
- File your insurance claim quickly — adjuster availability tightens fast after a regional event.
- Verify any contractor's Florida license and insurance before signing. Post-storm fraud is the predictable second disaster.
- Be skeptical of door-to-door offers, large up-front deposits, and anyone who cannot provide a local address.
